before bed, just around the yard,
the dogs and I, to clear our heads in the night air.
Tonight, in early spring, the snow mostly gone
and the ice pressed against the eastern shore, cleared
from my lake front by a strong wind that blew all day
but now has stopped, blown itself out, subdued,
we pause and watch the lake, motionless, not a ripple
or a splash, smooth, a sheet of glass reflecting
the night sky reduced now at sunset
to a ribbon of blue, darkening, and a splash of pink
and rose vermillion on the horizon, blending smoothly
into the black of night, a first star rising behind us -
tonight we will sleep well, our heads clear
and our lives restored, balanced
among the stars returning.
