Nature’s unexpected call to pad barefoot down the hall
to the bathroom at midnight, this cool summer night,
the rain starting to fall, just a passing shower, has
its advantages, returning to the warmth of my bed
and lulled back to sleep by the sound of a light rain
on the roof above me, a soft cradlesong lightly played,
lightly sung, a quiet hush punctuated contrapuntally
by the drip and drop of water off the roof, splashing,
a puddle formed under my window, one drip, drip, dropping,
a lullaby ended by morning’s sunshine when I awake.
